Cancun Agreements strengthened REDD

My concern is how long it will take to get to implementation and results-based-payment-for-performance. We need to be in action, now.

One of the most positive outcomes of the COP 16 was the progress made on REDD+.  The Cancun Agreements establish the overall goal for REDD+ activities: “to slow, halt and reverse forest cover and carbon loss.”  This language goes much further than previous drafts.  The Cancun Agreements then set forth a three phased approach that countries will use to achieve these objectives.  The first phase is readiness which includes developing national strategies and action plans, the second phase is implementation, and the third phase is results-based-payment-for-performance.  The Cancun Agreements also strengthened the REDD+ framework by calling for all countries, not just those that are home to forests, to take action to reduce pressures for deforestation.
